Gov. Blunt Announces Disaster Unemployment Assistance Available in Three Missouri Counties
JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Gov. Matt Blunt and the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations announced that Missourians living or working in three counties who are unemployed due to recent severe storms and tornadoes may be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance.
“The assistance will help workers who have been negatively impacted by the recent storms and tornadoes,” said Gov. Blunt. “I am pleased the federal government responded quickly to this disaster request for additional resources to help these workers.”
Missourians who file from the following counties have no later than June 27, 2008, to file for disaster unemployment assistance: Barry, Jasper, and Newton counties.
Disaster unemployment assistance is intended for those who are not eligible for benefits under a state’s regular unemployment insurance program. Farmers, self-employed individuals and others who are denied regular unemployment insurance benefits may now be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance.
Funds for this program are provided by the federal government and do not come from the state employer payroll taxes used to finance regular unemployment benefits.
Missourians who need information about how to file a claim should call (800) 788-4002. Additionally, Missourians impacted by the severe storms and tornadoes in all the declared counties can register for assistance by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at (800) 621-3362), (TTY (800) 462-7585), or register with FEMA online at http://www.fema.gov/> .
